You Cant Knock It Until Youve Tried It
You Cant Knock It Until Youve Tried It Are you listening to that voice in your head. Do you believe the way you think is the way everyone thinks? Are you using your own preferences to filter and determine what youll do? You may be missing out! Whether you are a job seeker, small business, or just someone trying to stay up with the trends, I want to share something with you. Defending Social Media Frequently I find myself trying to defend, justify or explain Facebook, Twitter, and/or Google+. It isnt always easy. In fact, sometimes I have to give up trying to be a cheerleader for social media/networking. But this is what I know. If you havent tried it, whatever that platform is (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) you have little basis to make judgement (in my opinion). By trying it, I mean really working it. Youve heard the analogies before. You cant just buy a treadmill, bike, weights, or piece of workout equipment and expect it will build muscle and trim away fat. You have to regularly use it. Social networks are no different. FacebookI dont Get It With about 850,ooo users, Facebook it where it is happening. Well, thats what they say. I love it for keeping in touch with my friends and family, but Ill be honest. I havent -figured out how to use it for my business. As a result, I dont put much effort into it. I let my blog posts auto-populate and kind of sit back. So when my weekly email came from Facebook and this is what I saw, my first reaction was See, nothings happening! Only one (1) new like this entire week! But this is because I am not working it. I am not active. I dont have a plan and Facebook is not my main focus. It barely gets much of my attention at all. Twitter is Where Its At By contrast, Twitter is my tool of preference. I love the people I interact withmy peeps! And the numbers reflect that. (Psst. Crowdbooster is a pretty neat tool, but it is no longer free) Lists You Should Know About Now, for a little horn tooting, if you dont mind! Ive been recognized by some super bloggers I respect and most recently by Rich DeMateo of Corn on the Job, Top 25 Twitter Accounts for Job Seekers to Follow. This is huge for me. It means a lot and is kind of like a trophy for the effort I put into Twitter (and my blog)! These are some of the other lists Ive made! Or Facebook is a waste of time, but it all depends on the effort you are putting into it. What are you knocking? What arent you doing or trying that may just be your next great opportunity? What are your goals? What is your purpose? How will you know you are being successful/having an impact? The answers arent always monetary, but they should all be measurable! This is absolutely true for job seekers and businesses alike!

Scared in your job search - Hallie Crawford
Scared in your job search Happy Halloween! Are you scared in your job search? Are you ready to take the risks needed? Are you ready to overcome your individual obstacles? I met with a former career coaching client for coffee yesterday. We worked together last year and she is now in a job she loves! She is very risk averse (she said so herself) but she didnt let her fear stand in the way of transitioning into a smaller law firm out of her corporate in house counsel job at a large bank here in Atlanta. She said it wasnt as hard to let go of the paycheck as I thought. What can you do to address the fears in your job search? Here are some steps to help you get started: Identify what your fears are. Take a minute to write down the three biggest fears you have about making a career change Analyze these fears. Are they accurate? Realistic? Are you blowing things out of proportion? Do this three step process with each fear: Where did this fear come from? Is it true? What can you do to address it? Take action. Identify the steps that you can take to observe these fears, rather than be their victim. Is it an affirmation? Positive thinking? Do you need to do something specific, like take a class to address the I dont have experience fear?. You need to bring the fear outside of you so that you can see it and do something about it. Dont let it run the show inside of your head. âMost of our obstacles would melt away if, instead of cowering before them, we should make up our minds to walk boldly through them.â ~Orison Swett Marden Atlanta Career Coach P.S. Finding LinkedIn Resume Writers
Finding LinkedIn Resume WritersOne of the great things about using LinkedIn is that you can find a number of potential professionals just by searching the website. When it comes to your career, it is important to know how to find the right person and for that, you must first build a good reputation with the community by demonstrating that you have done your homework and know what you are talking about. In order to build up your credibility, you first need to find a new resume writer to collaborate with. LinkedIn is a powerful platform that can be used to interview prospective professionals that would use this site to network and recruit others. You can also join various groups on the site and ask professional there for recommendations.Just because LinkedIn has millions of members does not mean that there are enough professionals to fit their specifications. Because they can not keep up with all the requests, it only makes sense to get a writer or two who are good at what they do and w ho have experience in helping their clients achieve their career goals. After all, you want to go through the process of interviewing potential individuals and they want to interview you too.The writers can help you create an account on LinkedIn and send them an invitation to connect. Be sure to choose someone who has experience with the kind of product you are looking for. It is not too difficult to find one to help you out here as they are readily available. From there, it is time to see whether you will benefit from their experience with the technical aspects of marketing a particular product. Many people will jump to conclusions about the writer's abilities based on the description he or she gives. Remember that if you choose a writer that has no experience with the industry, you will have no way of knowing if that writer knows what he or she is doing. If you have any doubts about their professional experience, you can always make an appointment with them and ask them to give you the opportunity to show off what they have to offer. A good resume writer knows that it is far better to give you a well-written document than to provide you with a poorly written one and you must choose carefully in order to ensure that the result is more than what you expected. There are many resume writers out there and not all of them are equal. Although you do not have much power in this arena, you have every right to make sure that you get the best match between you and the writer.

What Your Resume Should Look Like in 2017
What Your Resume Should Look Like in 2017 For MONEYâs 2018 version of what your resume should look like, click here. Resume trends change quickly. From head shots to QR codes to company logos, itâs hard to tell which extras will get your application noticed, and which will get you tossed out of the running. Some things never go out style, though: When it comes to packaging your work experience, crisp writing and brevity still reign supreme. Add a clean, modern design and some descriptive storytelling, and youâre well on your way to landing at least an interview â" if not a whole new gig. While the job market is expected to keep booming in 2017, competition will be stiff. As you shop the job market, make your resume stand out by using the tips (and the accompanying downloadable template) below. 1. Pay Attention to Format Design matters. What you want is a balance â" a smooth, clear look thatâs got just enough panache to stand out. Adding a small pop of color is an easy way to spice things up without jarring the reader, says Dana Leavy-Detrick, owner of Brooklyn Resume Studio. Also, put some thought into the font you choose. Times New Roman is dated and boring, she says, but âa clean, sleek font gives a more tightened-up presentation.â 2. Make the Top Count âThe top one-third of your resume is what a recruiter or hiring manager scans to determine if they will read the rest ⦠and they only give it three seconds,â says career coach Jennifer Braganza. Make yours an attention grabber: Point the reader to places where you have samples of your work product â" LinkedIn, a personal website â" and add your phone and email address. Bonus tip: If youâre still using a Hotmail or Yahoo account, nowâs the time to get a Gmail address â" or, if applicable, an email tied to your website. âHaving a Yahoo, AOL, or education-based email address makes you look like youâre living in the past,â says Christy Hopkins, human resources consultant at Fit Small Business. 3. Promote Your Brand If youâve still got an objective section underneath your header, dump it. You want to show what you can do for an employer, not what they can do for you, says Sam Nolan, a professional resume writer and the blogger behind the career advice column âDear Sam.â (Some resume elements in the above courtesy of Wendy Enelow; downloadable template here.) âA qualification summary should take up the most valuable real estate on your resume,â Nolan says. âThe point is to highlight what you canât afford a potential employer to miss ⦠Itâs a high-level overview of your candidacy.â This should also parallel the âSummaryâ section on your LinkedIn page, which serves as a virtual resume, says professional resume writer Laurie J. James. In both places, youâll want language that calls out some of the achievements and attributes that make you most valuable to an employer. 4. Emphasize Key Skills Also near the top, catch the hiring managerâs attention by emphasizing your skill set. Doing so cements the value you can bring to the role, as opposed to what youâre looking for in a job, Leavy-Detrick says. As you eye different postings, rework this section to emphasize the skills that make the most sense for each (rather than using the same boilerplate language for every job). Applicant tracking systems, or the software used to scan resumes, look for relevant keywords to move a candidate forward. The trick to making it in the âyesâ pile, Nolan says, is to identify phrases from the job posting and mirror them on your resume. Also note: No bot, nor human, is looking specifically for soft skills, James points out. So delete overused phrases like âquick learner,â âhard worker,â and âgreat attitude,â and sub in a list of hard skills. Distinguishable tech and social media knowledge is particularly relevant in todayâs job market, she says. (And no, the Microsoft Office suite doesnât count.) 5. Highlight Performance Donât make hiring managers hunt for your achievements, says executive resume writer Laura Smith-Proulx. Instead, pull out a standalone summary of what youâve accomplished. This is another place where you want to tailor the mix of awards and benchmarks to a job youâre applying for. If you were promoted, why? If you saved your department money, how much? Did you successfully lead a high-stakes project? How? If youâre having trouble populating this section, Smith-Proulx suggests looking to past performance reviews for ideas. What have your bosses and coworkers said that you do better than anyone else? Or, as Smith-Proulx puts it, âWhat is your superpower?â Differentiate this section from the summary at the top by focusing on quantifiable evidence. Think dollar signs and percentage points. 6. Show Key Work Metrics When you get to your work experience, donât just list titles and dates. Use a few lines of text to weave a story for hiring managers. When did you change industries? Why were you promoted? Where do you aim to go next? Then, use bullet points to back your claims with relevant facts and figures. âThe only way to make yourself look unique is to dig into what you did beyond the expected,â Nolan says. Statistics are an easy way to prove you did more than the job description demanded. 7. Control Your Timeline Your resume is a selection of your most relevant work history. If youâre anything beyond an entry-level employee, your internships and other early jobs are taking up valuable space, Smith-Proulx says. Omit experience that dates back further than 10 years unless itâs essential to your narrative â" say, an internship with Jeff Bezos that changed your career trajectory. You can also leave out graduation dates. No sense giving an ageist hiring manager an excuse to pass you over because youâre too young â" or too old. Real Talk My Colleague is Excluding Me (on Purpose)
Real Talk My Colleague is Excluding Me (on Purpose) Work relationships can be awkward. But theyre militrischer abschirmdienste even harder to navigate when theyre layered with offensive and potentially inappropriate behavior, like the behavior one FGBer recently faced in her office. My boss told me that one of her peers welches doing everything she possibly can to have you excluded from your project, one FGBer wrote to the Community.Apparently, this peer of my boss had requested months ago that I be removed from the project, but I dont know why, she continued. After my boss said no, her peer went above her head to her boss and asked for me to removed. And boss boss also said no. She didnt even tell me about this until after I asked why intentional exclusion of a team member wouldnt be considered an HR violation. Is it wrong of me to be mad that these members of senior leadership allowed this to happen without HR intervention? I still dont know what the initial complaint was. For refer ence, I got my maximum raise and highest performance evaluation score a few months ago.Several FGBers responded to the original poster to offer similar experiences and advice on the subject.Trust me, I understand your questions of why HR wasnt involved, one woman wrote. However, I would encourage you to document this in your personal files and not push the issue. Clearly, your boss and their boss are pleased with your work and are fighting for you. Try to let that be your comfort in the situation. But make aya you document this in your files. You may need it if something else arises.I think my initial reaction would be frustrated and confused as well, another woman said. However, it sounds like upper management has your back and is rooting for you based on their saying no to the peers request and their giving you the highest performance evaluation and raise (congratulations, by the way) So, clearly, youre doing a great job. I guess the next question is is your peers request worth st ressing over? Advice for documenting is a good idea either way.And a third FGBer wrote People, even senior managers, can be fickle. It sounds like you are doing everything right based on your boss reaction to this behavior. I wouldnt let this shake your confidence, because it likely has little to do with you and your performance. But as others said, documentation is important in case you need to issue a complaint (or a group complaint is issued). It is understandingly frustrating to hear that another employee at your company wants you excluded from work. Its especially frustrating when you feel (and have been told) that you are performing well. Documenting these incidents and stories from your boss are important at any level. If another story surfaces about this particular employee working to exclude you, you may consider involving HR mora seriously. But at this point in time, it seems as though your boss and her boss, as well respect you, and are proud of the work you have been doi ng. Try not to think about the one negative voice amongst the more powerful and influential positive ones.I understand completely and have had a similar experience, one FGBer said. Document it, dont forget it, but move on and keep doing the stellar job youve been doingFor all work, career and lifestyle questions, consult the Fairygodboss Community to receive advice from other FGBers.
